The trial of National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh has been adjourned by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday till May 17th.

Abisola Alawode: Perhaps It’s Time For Mavins to Try Something Different

First there was Dorobucci, then came Oga Titus, followed by Jantamanta and most recently, Mungo Park. What do all these songs have in common apart from the fact that they were all released by Mavin records artistes? You could call them ‘corny’ and you won’t be wrong.
Don Jazzy is a genius. Let me state that clearly. His exploits in the Nigerian entertainment industry are second to none. But some of the songs that he and his team at Mavin have been churning out recently leave a lot to be desired.
One cannot blame the Mavins though. Corny songs have a way of resonating with Nigerians. We dance to them in clubs; we play them at our ceremonies even at sober events like burials. The Mavins have probably realized this hence the predominant style of music they put out. Having found success with Dorobucci, Don Jazzy and his Mavin team probably decided that this was the path to follow. Almost all the songs they put out after that had the same tempo.
This in itself is a good decision but at the same time, Don Jazzy should have seen the handwriting on the wall after the release of Jantamanta. I mean, this song was dead on arrival. The video did not help matters. Even the starring role of popular Nollywood actor Imeh ‘Ikon’ Bishop in the video of Oga Titus could not save the song from also crashing.
One might say the music style of the Mavins is working judging by the social media attention the songs mentioned above have gotten but I beg to differ.
The average Nigerian music lover wants to hear more than the current crop of commercial sounds that are constantly in our faces. There exists other genres of music our musicians can explore. Most of them even have songs like this but the fear of the ‘Nigerian market’ syndrome won’t let them release the songs.
These days, some are of the opinion that the Mavins as a collective unit have lost their music appeal because of the rate at which they put out cheesy songs. Some even claim that they can predict the kind of song each artiste on the roster may put out. This should not be the case.
One of the things that endeared Don Jazzy to and the defunct Mo’ Hits crew to fans back in the day was the fact that no one knew what they were up to music wise. There was always excitement in the air whenever D’banj, Wande Coal, Dr Sid or even D’Prince announced a new song. That excitement has been lost today in the Mavins.
With the number of talented artistes Mavin records has on its roster, perhaps it is time for them to switch things up.

Ibadan Couple divorce after 10 Year Marriage due to “Sango Worship” & Infidelity

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Monday dissolved a 10-year-old marriage between, Rafiu and his wife Monsurat, for infidelity and worship of Sango.
The President of the court, Ademola Odunade, held that the marriage had suffered irreconcilable differences.
Odunade awarded custody of the first child to the husband and the remaining two to the wife because they were are still small.
He said that the husband Rafiu would pay a monthly feeding allowance of N4,000 for the upkeep of each of the two children and be responsible for their education and other welfare.
Rafiu, had in his petition, urged the court to dissolve his marriage to his wife because she was adulterous and a worshipper of Sango contrary his Islamic belief.
My lord, since I got married to Monsurat in 2006, she had been disobedient to me in all ways, including moving around in the late hours of the night.
What I found out was that she was involved in extra-marital affairs with her co-Sango worshippers.I kept thinking that she would change her ways, but I can no longer withstand the embarrassment and shame Monsurat has brought to bear on me.
I am a Muslim by faith and I told her that she must follow my religion, but she strongly resisted my instruction.
In addition to her disobedience, Monsurat kept threatening me with all sorts of fetish means through her concubines to kill me.
I have told her that if she cannot practice my faith, she was free to leave my home.
I want to have my children because if she has custody of them, Monsurat might instill those negative practices into them,” he explained.
Monsurat, who did not oppose the divorce claim, denied any act of adultery. Monsurat said.
Nurani knew all along that I am a traditional worshipper of Sango before marrying me and he cannot all of a sudden deny me access to my ancestral background.
It is true that I return home in the night and it is due to the night worships that we had to do on most occasions.
You know, I have to do the cooking for my fellow Sango worshippers.
In fact, Nurani had violently attacked an elderly man who supervises our worship, inflicting serious injuries on him in the process.
He cannot take good care of the children,”

Nigeria needs to urgently diversify its economy – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Guangzhou, China, said that his administration would take urgent steps to restructure Nigeria’s economy by encouraging new investments in mining, agriculture and manufacturing.
The president, who stated this at a reception in his honour by the Communist Party of China, said that Nigeria would welcome the support of the Chinese government, foreign investors and local businesses for efforts to diversify the nation’s economy.
A statement issued in Abuja by Mallam Garba Shehu, said the President noted that the diversification of the Nigerian economy was long overdue as continued reliance on crude oil exports had always made the economy vulnerable to shocks.
“This time we will be more deliberate. The government and businesses will be involved,” Buhari said.
In his remarks, the Secretary of the Communist Party, who is also the Governor of the Guangdong Province, Hu Chinhua, pledged that the region would support the implementation of all the bilateral agreements reached with the Chinese government during Buhari’s visit.
The statement added that Buhari also visited the Sino-Singapore Knowledge City in Guangzhou “which showcases advancements by China in medical, science and technological inventions”.

We are determined to help our own friend and partner to defeat Boko Haram – UK

UK Minister for International Development – Nick Hurd
The United Kingdom (UK) says it is supporting Nigeria in the ongoing war against the Boko Haram insurgents. UK Minister for International Development, Nick Hurd, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that UK had a very long cordial relationship with Nigeria.
“The very long partnership between UK and Nigeria matters a great deal to us; even my Prime Minister has made it very clear that we stand shoulder to shoulder with Nigeria in the battle against Boko Haram. We understand how many thousands and millions of peoples’ lives have been devastated by the atrocities in the North East. We are determined to help our own friend and partner to defeat that barbaric group,” he said.
Hurd said at the moment, the UK’s support took the form of a big commitment to training and capacity building in the military. He said that his country was pleased with the successes so far recorded by the military against Boko Haram insurgents recently.
On the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls, Hurd said UK was always supportive of the determination to ensure the safe return of the girls but challenged Nigeria to lead the girls’ rescue.
“My Prime Minister, the British Government and the British people are fully supportive of the determination to bring the girls home. They have empathy with that but this (rescue) needs to be led by the Nigerian government, there has to be a Nigerian solution to this. I made it clear to the Vice-President that we will help but we are going to follow a Nigerian lead,” he said.
On a report that the UK knew the whereabouts of the girls, Hurd said: “My information is constrained by the fact that I’m International Development Minister. I’m not into greater deal into the military intelligence cooperation. I don’t have a full answer to that question.”
On the humanitarian assistance, the envoy said that UK was increasing its commitment with another 33 million pounds.
He said the increased fund was informed by the assessment that was carried out about the needs in the north eastern part of the country which were around nutrition, food and protection.
He said UK was interested about the stability and real development of the region and called on the international community to be more effective in its response.

We seized about 61 or 62 houses in an estate from a female civil servant – ICPC

Ekpo Nta
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC says it has begun arresting and prosecuting civil servants with assets beyond their pay grade.
The Chairman of the commission, Ekpo Nta said this while addressing participants of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Abuja on Friday. Speaking on the theme, “The role of the ICPC in the War Against Corruption: Mandate, Strategies and Challenges”, Nta said,
We are developing scorecard like Transparency International which rates countries as to the level of corruption of countries. We have developed one for ministries departments and agencies. Hopefully, we know those who will take the first prize.
From one of the employees of one of the organisations, we seized about 61 or 62 houses in an estate. The matter is in court so I can’t say too much but I want to say that the officer was not a man. We do prosecution but also try to seize the assets acquired (through corrupt means) so that apart from prosecution, we can strip you of the assets within and outside the country
Ekpo said that once the 2016 budget is passed, the commission will begin monitoring how monies are being spent in the ministries, departments, and agencies.
He also noted that lecturers in universities who demand sex from female students in return for good grades are also being prosecuted. He said that the ICPC has the right to look into the matter, since it also bordered on abuse of office.

LASG to construct additional Pedestrian Bridge in Ojota within 3 months

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it would construct an additional footbridge at Ojota bus-stop on Ikorodu Road to complement the existing one following the upsurge in its usage.
The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, said in a statement that the decision arose out of the need to reduce the long time pedestrians using the bridge were now spending on queue – Click here to see it. He said the construction of the additional bridge had become necessary after the newly erected New Jersey Wall on the median of the expressway.
Ayorinde said that this had effectively curtailed indiscriminate dropping and picking of passengers along the highway as well as dangerous crossing of the road by commuters. He reiterated that the need for the construction of the wall, which was similar to the measure taken between Ketu and Mile 12 axis of the road, was meant to reduce fatalities on the part of commuters crossing the highway.
Ayorinde said it was erected to also reduce the traffic gridlock caused by commercial buses and motorcycles engaging in indiscriminate dropping and picking of passengers.
He commended the orderly conduct of commuters in the usage of the bridge and  urged them to be patient with government until the new one was constructed. Ayorinde said that the project was expected to be delivered within three months and would accommodate the special needs of the physically-challenged for their ease of movement.

Jonathan’s Administration had “Zero Political Will” to Save but Obasanjo did – Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Speaking at George Washington University, Okonjo-Iweala said that Nigeria was able to save $22 billion dollars during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration that saved the country during the 2008 economic crisis because there was the political will to do it.
“In my second time as a finance minister, from 2011 to 2015, we had the instrument, we had the means, we had done it before, but zero political will. So we were not able to save when we should have. That is why you find that Nigeria is now in the situation it is in. Along with so many other countries.” she said.
The Lazard Special Advisor said that African countries need to devise tools and mechanisms to boost economic resilience; these tools and mechanisms, she said, should be accommodated in the constitution or separated from political manipulation “so that these countries can survive over time.”

Watch “Onyeuwaoma” – Nikki Laoye & Banky W’s Love Duet

Wahala Media Entertainment presents the video for the love duet, “Onyeuwaoma” by Nikki Laoye & Banky W.
Playing the roles of a bride and groom, the two singers light up the screen in the enchanting video, bringing to life the soul stirring emotions and passion of the hit song which is presently enjoying massive airplay on radio.
In Nikki’s words –
The video for Onyeuwaoma is a dedication to “True Love” – the undying love that transcends through the generations, the kind of love my parents shared – A love so strong, that it shone so brightly, even in that dark hour, as I watched my Dad hold on to my Mum as he breathed his last in her arms that fateful night.
And now it lives on in us – “their children”, we are the expression of their love and we will bring it forth once again in our own children …. A Never-Ending Love Story indeed!!
We all are simply an extension of love from God to our parents to the world.
#TrueLoveNeverDies…It lives on in the pages of a new chapter of life.
Much love to Banky W for helping me share this piece of my heart with the world today.
The video features a cameo appearance by Nikki’s Mum, Yetunde Laoye.
Directed by Frizzle & Bizzle Films, the captivating video was shot on location in Lagos, Nigeria at the Lekki Conservation Centre.
It will certainly melt your hearts.
